I always thought "booty" (given almost any interpretation of the word...) should not contain the word "Boo", because that's what you say when you don't want something...
Um... I could ramble about using black holes for time travel, or perhaps on potential designs for stellar objects related to Dyson spheres and ringworlds?
So... if you start with a ringworld, you could have it enclosed for environment, which means the side walls can be shorter, since they don't need height to maintain atmosphere. Additionally, if it's not all that wide, you don't need as much total mass to make it. So why make one smaller than Niven's design? Because there's much more to it.
One of the minor features is a 'roof' that gathers energy from the star, as well as only letting through the right amount of heat and light, through a daytime cycle of the ceiling brightening and dimming. This allows easier placement of the total diameter of the ring, to allow other features. Such as...
A self stabilizing gravitational spin. The gathered solar energy is run through a conducting material that travels the entire circumference of the ring, which in turn interacts with the magnetic field of the star as an electromagnetic motor. This spins the ring, creating gravity for those within, and, if I understand electromagnetics properly (and I hope I do) keeps the ring at a constant distance, circling the star's magnetic equator.
